Organic Scripting Fun

A little insight to my 'process'. :o)

I primarily do my rough draft of the script in my little pocket sketch book, with thumbnail pages about 3 inches wide, two to a page. Very small. Just to get an idea of how much text there is going to be, and how big I should make each box, etc.

Then I do them at a 9 x 12 inch size, roughly, for the purpose of laying out the action, and just kinda seeing the space I have to play with. I then blow that one up at my local copy shop, and do my final art at a size of 12 x 16 inches. When I do the final pages, things can still change. Added lines. Changed perspectives, etc. One thing I tend to do is draw all my characters at a 3rd angle, waist up level. The final art stage is when I look at and decide where I need the close ups and wide shots, as well as more jokes. (Yes, there's jokes ;o)

And then sometimes, I get to the 9 x 12 rough pencil stage and scrap everything. Here's an abandoned page (10), which I thought I'd show you 'cos it had one of my favourite gags I had to get rid of. Boo. :o(

I always like reading about other people's processes. I used to try and draw comic strips, life-size (well, publishing size, you know what I mean, first) and got discouraged quickly. Good to see that thumbnails work for most things!

I love seeing this loose stuff. It really lets you see decisions and ideas before they were set and the roads not taken sometimes. You've got a great style man.
